Department of Textiles was established in the year 1978 as an attached Department under the Ministry of Textiles. Previously it was a division of the Department of Industries under the control of Ministry of Industry. Virtually, this Department was incepted in early nineteenth century during the then British Government. From 1947 to 1977 this Department was working under the Ministry of Trade. Commerce and Industry. With the long historical background; this Department  played a vital role to develop Textiles and Handloom sector. Till 1993 the Department of Textiles acted as a sponsoring authority of Textile Industries. Then the Govt. transferred the functions of sponsoring authority to the Board of Investment.

Besides, Department of Textiles imparts technical training through its educational Institutions to fulfill the demand of Textile technician and skilled manpower for textile sector. The Department is controlling  6(six) Textile Engineering Colleges (provides 4years B.Sc in Textile Engineering) 6(six) Textile Institutes (4 Years Diploma Course) & 40 (forty) Textile Vocational Institutes ( 2 year secondary school certificate equivalent course) situated in the different 40 districts of Bangladesh.
