TEXTILE INSTITUTES
Bangladesh is mainly an agricultural country. Employment opportunities other than agricultural sector were limited since ancient period. But the country had historical heritage on Textiles & cottage Industry. Thus to create professional employment opportunities especially for the unemployed youths the then Bengal Govt. under British rule, established professional training Institutes in the field of Textiles in early Eighteenth century (1900-1930). These institutes were named as District weaving school. After 1947, such six District weaving schools fall within the territory of the then East Pakistan and were located at Dhaka, Pabna, Tangail, Dinajpur (Shifted from Khulna), Zorargong, Chittagong & Begumgonj, Noakhali. Later on, the Dhaka District weaving school is upgraded as the College of Textile Technology and imparting BSc. in Textile Technology under Dhaka University.
Simultaneously after the emersione of Bangladesh one new District Textile Institute was established at Barisal in 1981. But these weaving schools were renamed as District Textile Institutes. The Department of Textiles as its part of activities, were conducting 2 years Textile Certificate course in these 6 District Textile Institutes. But with the need & demand of mid level technologist in the rapidly expanding textile sector these 6 textiles Institutes were upgraded under ADP in 1994-95 as Diploma Textile Institute where full-fledged Diploma level Technical Education in the field of Textiles were taught with the syllabus & curriculum Formulated by Technical Education Board. In the syllabus & curriculum Yarn manufacturing, fabric Manufacturing, wet processing, Garments & clothing technology were introduced in the diploma course. This Diploma education is conducted as per curriculum of the Bangladesh Technical Education Board. Details of the Institutes are stated below:
